When the usual wallpaper and decorative plaster do not look good on the wall, and you want something new, use wood. This method for decorating walls will help create an original and cozy interior. Plus, wood will never go out of style. We have prepared an overview of timber wall finishes and colours for any budget: from inexpensive oriented strand boards to classic carved panels. After all, you can admire as much as you like on hand-made wenge wood panels, but if there is no financial opportunity to purchase them, then the following question arises: what are the alternatives?
Budget options
Lining
It looks spectacular after being stained or painted in a beautiful colour; besides, you should choose a non-standard wide board shape. You can even sew up the ceiling with clapboard and paint it white – we often see this option in Scandinavian interiors; it gives the room a feeling of comfort.
Board
The board, like the lining, has great potential. For example, you can experiment with styling: put on a diagonal, herringbone or rhombuses, paint with a gradient transition. Huge scope for imagination at a minimum cost. The catch is to choose the boards wisely (not wet or dry). Smooth calibrated boards are suitable for strict minimalism, and rough mixed-sized boards are suitable for more “country” interiors.
Laminate
As with flooring, laminate flooring is an inexpensive alternative to timber wood flooring. It has been used for a long time and widely; it looks great in city apartments. But there is one crucial drawback; this material does not like allergy sufferers.
OSB – oriented strand board
An unusual and bright material, it is rarely seen in private interiors. But if you want to experiment with colour and shape, then this is a great option. The material is in vogue now: very cheap, easy to saw; it can be used to trim walls, ceilings and make furniture from OSB.
Average price category
Parquet, engineering, solid board
Lay the block parquet with patterns and a herringbone, the parquet board – in a split; you can choose different shades. Plus, compared to laminate and pine boards – it looks much nobler.
Aged board
You can take both a wide barn board of the 19th century (expensive), and larch from the neighbours’ dachas (cheaper), but still, it will not work at all on a budget. Small dies are often taken of different breeds and degrees of aging and laid out at random, wide massive boards – regularly in length. A board with semi-faded paint can also be an excellent decor element – you just need to fix the colour so that it does not fly around further.
Ends and cuts
This is what I tentatively called a creative made of ends and small boards. Due to the large amount of preparatory work – not quite budget, but very creative! Such a wall usually turns out to be embossed, and strongly protruding boards are very convenient to use as shelves. For a variety of colours and textures, line the wall with different types of wood.
Expensive options
Wall and veneer panels
They are often found in the same showrooms as the parquet board or made to order; they are much more expensive. They come in a variety of shapes, from minimalistic to custom made with metal and marble inlay. More budget options are made of oak in the manner of a parquet board; the most expensive ones are made of an array of exotic wood species.
Classic carved solid wood panels
I distinguish them in a separate category because such panels are applicable only to the classic interior of a country house. An English carved dark oak study or a palace hall is a prime example. You can order them at the carpentry workshop.
